What is this unit about?

David was an unlikely choice to follow Saul as king, but David’s victory over Goliath revealed that God was with him. King David’s rule would be better than Saul’s, but it was still far from perfect as David committed a series of grievous sins. God, however, was gracious to forgive when David repented.

Why is this important for our kids?

King David often gets painted as a perfect King, a man after God’s own heart (Acts 13:22). He was certainly better at leading God’s people, but it is the grace that was extended to David that reveals God’s character. We certainly want to encourage children when they are generous and other-centred in their actions and words, but let’s refrain from using phrases like “Good Boy” or “Good Girl”. Good boys and girls don’t need a saviour, but we do have a gracious God who longs to forgive when we repent. We also see that Jesus is the perfect King and the reason God can forgive our sins, His wrath has already been poured out on Jesus.

Big Picture Question

What is GRACE?
Grace is when God gives us something good even when we do not deserve it.

Key Passage/Memory Verse

“We have been set free because of what Christ has done. Because he bled and died our sins have been forgiven.
We have been set free because God’s grace is so rich.”
Eph 1:7 (NIrV)
