Bible Reference:

1 Kings 3-11, James 1:5, 1 Corinthians 1:23-24, 2 Timothy 3:15

Lesson Aim:

To revise the series of lessons on King Solomon, reinforcing the main themes that we have looked at and showing that Solomon was sometimes a good King, sometimes a bad King, but Jesus is the perfect King.

Main Message:

King Solomon obeyed God when he first was king and he was a wise king. But then King Solomon disobeyed God and that made God angry.

MEMORY VERSE:

For the foolishness of God is wiser than human wisdom, and the weakness of God is stronger than human strength. 1 Corinthians 1:25

Helping It Stick

Choose from these activities to enjoy with your kids to help repeat and consolidate the Main Message from this part of the bible.

Creative

God’s Temple: Print, cut and glue a model of the temple built by Solomon. Have each family member make their own cube temple (parents to help with the cutting) and with each cube, place a private little prayer note inside before sealing it shut, whether it’s to ask God for wisdom or some help with homework! Download the model template here.

Revision Craft: Print this template of the major events of Solomon’s life, draw relevant pictures for each, then cut and sort into the correct order.

Musical

Kids Church Music: Jesse and Josh from the HBC Kids Mag Team have put together a set of 4 songs for younger kids to enjoy, just like old times but in your lounge room!

Use this rap beat to write your own Solomon Summary rap!

Write a Song: Write a rap to summarise Solomon's story. Here is the first verse to get you started

King Solomon was David’s son
The people wondered if he was the one:
the promised King, sent from God above
Or would he end up getting the shove?

Physical/Tactile

Hopscotch Wisdom: Write each word on a hopscotch square. You can either write them on the ground outside or on papers indoors. Ensure that everyone says the verse out loud as the child or parent jumps from word to word. See who can get across the fastest!

‘If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask God.” James 1:5

Charades: Use Key Phrases to play a game of charades - Solomon becoming King - asking God for wisdom - Solomon acting wisely - obeying God - building the temple - worshipping other Gods

Jacket Toss: Instruct the children to toss their jackets in a pile on the table. Now take the kids aside and blindfold them. Give each child the opportunity to pick his jacket out of the pile. Chances are, most of the kids picked the wrong jacket. The point is, it is hard to make the right choice without the right guide. Discuss how King Solomon asked God for wisdom and how we can too.

Role Playing: Have the kids reenact 1 Kings 3:16-28 (Solomon and the two mothers with the baby) by creating a courthouse and possibly dressing up as the king, or reciting one of his proverbs.

Cryptic Scavenger Hunt: Carefully hide pictures of a crown, God’s temple, Jesus Christ and the word Wisdom. Give kids cryptic clues so they know what to search for, then send them on their way!

Like King Solomon, what does every King wear on their head? (A crown)
What did King Solomon build that made God Happy? (God’s temple)
Who is the perfect King that died for our sins? (Jesus Christ)
What did King Solomon ask for that God gave? (Wisdom)

Have a reward at the end of the picture hunt. Just as God wants us to seek Him and his wisdom, he will also love and reward us . As the kids search, lend a hand and remind them that life is just as uncertain when you go about cluelessly and it’s important to ask God for wisdom to guide you.
