Bible Reference:

Philippians 2:6-8; John 13:1-17

Lesson Aim:

To tell the children about Jesus being a humble servant king who gave up all he had, and to contrast King Jesus with all the other kings. Up until now we have looked at kings (King Saul, King David, King Solomon, etc) who were ‘traditional’ kings—kings who lived like kings. When Jesus lived on earth, Jesus was a totally different king—a king who didn’t wear a crown, didn’t live in a palace, a king who lived as a servant and fully obeyed God, even when that meant death.

Main Message:

When Jesus lived on earth, Jesus didn’t live like an important king. He lived like a servant, he obeyed God and he showed God’s love to us.

MEMORY VERSE:

But he was pierced for our transgressions, he was crushed for our iniquities; the punishment that brought us peace was on him, and by his wounds we are healed. We all, like sheep, have gone astray, each of us has turned to our own way;and the Lord has laid on him the iniquity of us all.   Isaiah 53:5-6

Hokey Pokey! Change up the words to go with this Bible story. Thanks Preschool-Plan-It.com for the idea.

“You put your right foot in, you put your right foot out,
you put your right foot in and let Jesus wash it off.
Do the Hokey Pokey and you turn around.
Which king humbled himself for us?  JESUS!”

Physical/Tactile

No Shoes for Day: Washing feet may not seem like a big deal, but if you didn’t have shoes or footpaths (like in Jesus’ day) then the significance of this being an essential task would be much clearer. Let the kids spend the day out in the garden (or go for a walk at the park or Glenrock Reserve) without shoes. As their feet are being cleaned (you can decide who does the cleaning), discuss how feet cleaning was usually given to the lowest & youngest servant because it was a disgusting job. The Jesus is the King of Kings, he did not put himself above anyone else, instead serving everyone else.

King of Kings Revision: Read out the names below one at a time - if the kids think they were a good king, run to the right side of the room while if they were a bad king, run to the left side of the room (you might like to label the sides of the room so it’s easier to remember which side is which). See if you get them all correct!

List of kings covered: David, Solomon, Abijah, Asa, Josiah, Jesus
