I’m embarrassed to say it, but when the coronavirus pandemic finally came to Newcastle, I thought evangelism was done and dusted. Dead in the water. Kaput!
For the last seven years I’ve had the joy of getting to work alongside our church family in sharing Jesus with our city. And I believed in principle that nothing could stop Jesus calling people into His kingdom.
But if I’m being honest, in my heart, I didn’t really think it would happen.
One month later, God has proved me wrong. It’s certainly not the first time and, knowing me, I doubt it will be the last!
This past month God has humbled me with His power and left me in awe of His goodness, as he has used our family here at HBC to make Jesus' glory known. We’ve had more people keen to check out Jesus now than at any other point this year. And in His kindness and grace we’ve even seen one lady move from death to life.
Sure, the way we do evangelism has definitely changed. But the fact that Jesus is growing His kingdom, the fact that Jesus will continue to save people — that will never change.
And that’s no longer just a principle I believe, it's the reality I’ve had the joy of seeing across our church this past month. As Paul reminds us in the Scriptures, “Now is the time of God’s favour, now is the day of salvation” (2 Corinthians 6:2).
So let’s keep it up! I know life is crazy. The stress and anxiety from all the change and uncertainty is real, and I feel it too. But if God has taught me anything this past month, it’s that He will use us in our weakness and anxiety. He’s just that good!

1. Sam Chan: Evangelism in the COVID-19 Crisis
Engaging, practical and to the point. In under 3 minutes, Sam gives some tips for how to put Jesus on the agenda with our friends in the midst of COVID. Definitely worth the watch!
2. The Word 121
We may not be able to read the Bible physically with those who don’t know Jesus, but this great little resource lets you do it online. With booklets, videos and training material all provided, you’ll be equipped to work through John’s gospel with your friends or family no matter how much experience you’ve had with this kind of thing. Best of all, everything is free!
3. Christianity Explored: Tough Questions
It’s okay to not have all the answers to the curly questions. The team at Christianity Explored have packaged answers to some of the toughest questions in easy-to-digest 3 minute videos. This is a great resource to share with a friend who is raising these kinds of questions. It might be just the thing to help remove their barriers to exploring Jesus.

Why not read the first chapter of John Piper’s classic “Let the Nations Be Glad”? Nothing fuels the fire for sharing Jesus more than being captivated by the supremacy of our God.
