Christ - the Centre of Everything

by Steve Watt | Posted on December 24th in Magnification, Maturity, Sermon Series, UniChurch   1 Comment »

During 2010 six of our MTS apprentices will be preaching at UniChurch on Paul’s letter to the Philippians which speaks clearly on the centrality of Christ in every part of life.

This series will be spread out over the year, but make sure you get along and hear these young men opening the word of God. Also the second year apprentices (Ben, Geoff, Steve & James) will take questions from the floor after their talks.

So get along to UniChurch in 2010, it’s going to be a great year of opening God’s word and worshiping together.

By the way, if you’re wondering about the jumble of words in the graphic… It’s a word cloud made from the text of Philippians. The bigger the word the more times it occurs in the book. Pretty cool huh? Check out www.wordle.net if you’d like to mess around with this yourself.

Habakkuk Sermon Series

by Dave Moore | Posted on November 22nd in Pastors thoughts, Sermon Series   No Comments »

Life can be a mess.  Things don’t work out as they should, relationships are a strain and life seems unfair.  A word the Bible uses to cover all this is ‘evil’.  The prophet Habakkuk puts the question to God: ‘Why do you put up with evil?’.  God’s answer deals with Habakkuk’s questions and points the way forward to the way he ultimately deals with evil- the life, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ.  We’ll see that God promises the death of evil.  If you want to hear what God says, read Habakkuk this week and come and listen to Sunday’s talk.

The Lord’s Prayer - Sermon Series

by Dave Moore | Posted on September 24th in Pastors thoughts, Sermon Series   3 Comments »

The short, simple phrases of “the Lord’s prayer” have been said, shouted, whispered, and chanted for nearly 2000 years by millions of people worldwide. And unfortunately all too often, they are said as nothing but empty words… words spoken, but with little if any meaning or yearning behind them.

Starting on the 11th October, Greg Lee will be taking us through the depths of the simple prayer Jesus taught his disciples to pray.

Make sure you’re there to see what God’s heart yearns for us to ask him for.

Hunter Men’s Convention Talks

by Dave Moore | Posted on September 11th in Events, Maturity, Resources, Sermon Series   No Comments »

Hunter Men’s Convention was a great day of hearing from God’s Word about God’s world. Ben Pharlet spoke very fankly about sexuality in our culture, sexuality in our churches, and sex in our marriages. Here are two of the talks for you to listen to…

I need to warn you that there are parts of this that get pretty explicit, so this is really MA15+ material.

On the road with Jesus

by Sam Hilton | Posted on July 30th in Maturity, Sermon Series   No Comments »

Lambton & Unichurch - starts August 9

What does it look like to follow Jesus?  Up to this point we’ve learnt a lot about who Jesus is. He is the promised Messiah, he is the great prophet, he is the suffering servant of Isaiah, and he is God among us. We’ve learnt about his mission.  He has come to call sinners to repentance.  He is not interested in the self-righteous person who thinks they have no need for repentance but has compassion on those who know their humble state before God.

But what does it look like to be one of his followers?

Well Luke 9:51 changes everything.

As the time approached for him to be taken up to heaven, Jesus resolutely set out for Jerusalem.

From this point on in the gospel Jesus is marching to his death and it becomes very clear that following Jesus is not for the faint-hearted.

The Sabbath and Mums

by Dave Moore | Posted on July 10th in Pastors thoughts, Sermon Series   No Comments »

How on earth could a normal mother of babies or toddlers ever keep the OT Sabbath laws? This is a question I wrestled with while preparing a recent sermon on the Sabbath laws in Leviticus. You can listen to the sermon here:

The constant command in Exodus, Leviticus and Numbers is that none of the Jews were to do any ‘work’ or ‘regular work’ on the Sabbath. That is, the Sabbath was meant to be a day of ‘rest’. But how is that even possible if you’ve got young kids who need feeding and changing and chasing and dressing and cleaning every second they’re awake? How could you really keep the Sabbath with all that going on? (more…)

Manhood and Womanhood

by Richard Sweatman | Posted on June 15th in Events, Pastors thoughts, Sermon Series   6 Comments »

One of the most distinctive things about Christianity is the Bible’s view on manhood and womanhood.  Many people unfamiliar with the Jesus will be ‘ho-hum’ about things like the Trinity and the Resurrection, but mention that wives should submit to their husbands and they will jump out of their chairs!

On July 12 and 19 I’ll be giving two talks on manhood and womanhood.  We’ll look together at what the Bible has to say and how it makes a difference to our daily lives.  Come along and bring friends (AM and PM only).

Outlines of talks are here:

5 Talks from Leviticus

by Dave Moore | Posted on May 18th in HBC:City, HBC:Lambton, Sermon Series   No Comments »

Starting June 7, I’ll be preaching a series of 5 talks from the great book of Leviticus at HBC:City and HBC:Lambton. It would be great to start reading though it in your own time, and get the ideas mulling over in your head. Leviticus is a wonderful book that gives us a glimpse into the character of our God who draws near to his corupt creation in the most amazing ways, with the most unexpected results. Leviticus shows us just what it takes for God and sinful man to come together.

Life to the Full

by Sam Hilton | Posted on April 7th in Events, HBC:City, HBC:Lambton, Membership, Mission, Sermon Series, UniChurch, WAVE Summer Festival   No Comments »

Life to the Full… Is it possible??

In our broken world it is hard to imagine that Life to the Full is anything but a pipe dream. But Jesus, and his followers, claim that Life to the Full is possible. Come along and join us for a series of casual dinners where we’ll get to have a first hand look at the fundamental message Jesus Christ taught. Here more from someone who came along last year…

Week 1 (April 27): The Man You Can’t Ignore!

Jesus: Lord, Liar, Lunatic or Legend?

Week 2 (May 4): The Bible - Is It A Reliable Record?

Many suggest Chinese whispers shaped the Bible.Others suggest it’s full of fairy stories and inaccuracies. Is there evidence for its historical truth and can we therefore rely on it?

Week 3 (May 11): What Happens When God & Man Meet?

A God of love and a God of justice. Which is he? Is he both?

Which are we? Good, bad, or both?
What happens therefore when we die?

Week 4 (May 18): Jesus Is Executed - Why?

Of what significance is it to me?

Is he dead or alive?
How would you know?

Week 5 (May 25): How Would Jesus Have Us Respond?

What is a Christian? How do you become one? How is life any different?

Place: Waterboard Bowling Club, North Lambton
Time: 6pm - 8pm
Cost: $5 (includes dinner and dessert)
Registration: please fill out form here…

Easter Sermons at Hunter Bible Church

by Dave Moore | Posted on March 19th in HBC:City, HBC:Lambton, Mission, Sermon Series, UniChurch   No Comments »

This easter we’re kicking off our “Essential Jesus” sermon series at Easter. Sam Hilton will be speaking on Jesus’ death at a special ALL-IN Easter Friday service. Then on easter Sunday, at all three of our regular meetings, Sam will be speaking on Jesus’ resurrection.

All these events will be great for people who’ve maybe never considered Jesus and who he is.
